Waiting for You

(after the print by Louise Bourgeois
in Collaboration with Tracey Elim in
the Do Not Abandon Me Series)

It’s an endless wait
for me to meet you by a half
coming together
like fingers in a prayer
in the chambers of our hearts
you in another world, your own,
I, ours, in this
we seek an understanding
of our souls—
I’ll wait until your flesh decides
to join me on my bed
in consummation
of the love you dread.

A Sparrow’s Heart

(after the print by Louise Bourgeois
in collaboration with Tracey Emin in
the Do Not Abandon Me Series)

A sparrow’s heart begins
to beat inside of me
where once no heart at all
neither yours nor mine
but only of ourselves
we thought that moment
only as our own
as if the world would end
with you and I alone
lying at the ocean’s edge
for the tide to rise
and drown us in our age—
but feel the sparrow’s heart
its song
growing louder as I grow
waiting to be born
while still alone
waiting for my time to come.

I Lost You

(after the print by Louise Bourgeois
in collaboration with Tracey Elim in
the Do Not Abandon Me Series)

Having lost you once
I know how it would feel a second time.
Do not abandon me again
to make-believe
to live as if you were nothing more
than passion is to rain.
Vowing never to speak your name
I conjured you with amulets of silent prayer
and you appeared in the vapors of a flame
more real than you had ever been.
Do not abandon me once more
to die alone
among the ashes of our past.
