St. Katharine Drexel

UNITED NATIONS WORLD  INTERFAITH HARMONY WEEK

For Janine Canan

She took off
the signs of the world

and put on
the signs of God

and receiving the bread of angels,
God
upon her tongue

Like fragile birds
draw sustenance
from tender, open flowers

she fed upon
the world entire
in the glory, glory hour

and in that prima ecstasy
of Communion with humanity
in heaven and on earth

the wailing saints
of suffering

pierced her widening heart
like Mary's lanced

for they had no equal chance

and so
for them

she gave
and gave

and forgave
and forgave

until on God
Yes, yes on God

We, all of us,
all of us

glanced.
